    Curtis Stigers

    7:00 PM · Birdland Theater, Hell's Kitchen · $35.46

For the past 30 years, the singer, songwriter, saxophonist and guitarist Curtis Stigers has been making records that confound those who try to categorize his music or put him in a box. Stigers burst onto the recording scene in 1991 with his eponymously-titled debut album, which sold 1.5 million copies and spawned several self-penned, pop/soul hit singles, including , "rdquo" -> You're All That Matters To Me", , "rdquo" -> Never Saw A Miracle" and the worldwide top-ten hit, , "rdquo" -> I Wonder Why." The next year the singer/songwriter/saxophonist recorded Nick Lowe's , "rdquo" -> (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding" for , "rdquo" -> The Bodyguard" soundtrack, which has sold over 45 million copies worldwide. Stigers recorded two more pop-oriented albums in the 1990s and made guest appearances on several albums, including two by his early musical mentor, the legendary jazz pianist Gene Harris. In 2001 Stigers pivoted artistically and signed with Concord Jazz. Over the next 18 years he recorded nine genre-busting albums, combining his jazz sensibilities with his love for emotional, well-written modern songs from a wide variety of sources including rock, blues, soul, country and folk. During this period Stigers co-wrote and sang , "rdquo" -> This Life", the Emmy Award-nominated theme song to the wildly popular TV show , "rdquo" -> Sons Of Anarchy", and also made cameo appearances in the Seth MacFarlane movies , "rdquo" -> Ted" and , "rdquo" -> Ted 2". All the while, Stigers was cultivating a successful and enduring touring career, playing concerts around the world, performing songs from his jazz albums as well as newly reconstructed , "rdquo" -> jazz" versions of his hit songs from his early pop albums.

But as the engineer cues the recording and the evening wears on, the horrors slowly begin to escape the page to haunt the studio itself. A mesmerizing blend of gothic horror and psychological thriller, this cutting-edge theatrical experience uses groundbreaking binaural sound technology to immerse every audience member in a haunting world of sound. Pasquale Grasso Trio

    5:30 PM · Birdland Jazz Club, Hell's Kitchen · $35.46 · ↻ Every Saturday

It was the kind of endorsement most rising guitarists can only dream of, and then some. In his interview for Vintage Guitar magazines February 2016 cover story, Pat Metheny was asked to name some younger musicians whod impressed him. The best guitar player Ive heard in maybe my entire life is floating around now, Pasquale Grasso, said the jazz-guitar icon and NEA Jazz Master. This guy is doing something so amazingly musical and so difficult.Mostly what I hear now are guitar players who sound a little bit like me mixed with a little bit of [John Scofield] and a little bit of [Bill Frisell], he continued. Whats interesting about Pasquale is that he doesnt sound anything like that at all. In a way, it is a little bit of a throwback, because his modelwhich is an incredible model to haveis Bud Powell. He has somehow captured the essence of that language from piano onto guitar in a way that almost nobody has ever addressed. Hes the most significant new guy Ive heard in many, many years. As hes done with many rising jazz stars, Metheny later invited Grasso over to his New York pad to jam and share some wisdom. Hes since become a generous presence in Grassos life, and his assessment of Grassos playing isno surprisespot-on. Born in Italy and now based in New York City, the 30-year- old guitarist has developed an astounding technique and concept informed not by jazz guitarists so much as by bebop pioneers like Powell, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and the classical-guitar tradition. His new digital-only EP series, available beginning in June from Sony Masterworks, showcases Grasso in the solo-guitar format, where his intensive studies of both midcentury jazz and classical meld into a signature mastery that is, remarkably, at once unprecedented and evocative.

    A Ghost in Your Ear

3:00 PM · Audible's Minetta Lane Theatre, Greenwich Village · ↻ Every Sunday

When an actor arrives late to a sound studio for a last-minute audiobook recording session, he is handed the script of a chilling ghost story to read. But as the engineer cues the recording and the evening wears on, the horrors slowly begin to escape the page to haunt the studio itself. Fresh from an acclaimed, sold-out run in London, A GHOST IN YOUR EAR is the "truly terrifying headphone horror" (The Guardian) from the darkly brilliant mind of Tony Award® nominee Jamie Armitage (SIX), made in collaboration with Ben and Max Ringham (ANNA, National Theatre). A mesmerizing blend of gothic horror and psychological thriller, this cutting-edge theatrical experience uses groundbreaking binaural sound technology to immerse every audience member in a haunting world of sound. And at Audible's Minetta Lane Theatre - one of New York's most intimate venues - there's no escaping the frights. Enter if you dare.
